spotify "social" CASE STUDY // UI/UX

It is rare that you'll find me without earbuds in, headphones on, speakers bumping in the car, or on the TV in my apartment. I can't imagine life without music as dramatic as that may sound. Through this case study, I reimagined Spotify as more than just a streaming platform--as a platform to share music with others.

A number of Spotify social features exist, just not in the mobile app. For this reason, many of these designs are reconfigured form the Spotify Web Player to mobile app design. I also drew sharing feature inspiration from Instagram, one of the largest social media platforms.

Social Tab Layout

While working through mid-fi prototypes, I struggled with creating the most functional layout for the Social tab, which includes friend listening activity and sharing features. These are some of the early layout designs testing various displays.

Introducing Spotify Social.
Reimagining Spotify as not only a streaming platform, but a sharing platform.

Listening Activity

One feature brought into the mobile app directly from the Web Player is ability to view friend's listening activity. I tested multiple layouts of this feature, and ultimately chose to keep a similar format to the Web Player.

Shared With You Playlist

This playlist is a creation that comes as a result of sharing features. It compiles a mix of your 20 most recent songs, albums, or podcasts shared with you by your friends. On the playlist, you can see the user's profile picture who shared it.

Saving a Song Shared to You

As one of the two tabs in the Social navigation, from the "Sharing" tab, you can view all songs shared with you and can navigate to the album or source of the shared media.

Sharing a Song

Sharing a song, album or podcast is simple. With no need to share externally, you get the option to share a short note and send it off, all in 3 quick steps.
